For this entry “Stripping” means the cutting and removal of the insulation of a wire conductor. After a conductor has been cut to length it is then prepared for the next step or for crimping. For this purpose, a specific length of the conductor insulation has to be removed, while preventing damage to the conductor. The length of the conductor insulation to be removed depends on the terminal clamping point or the crimp to be processed.
To maintain the rated insulation voltage the required wire stripping length is specified for every Weidmuller product. The stripping dimensions must be observed and neither the conductor nor the remaining insulation should be damaged. The lengths (specified in mm e.g. 6 + 0.5mm) must be maintained to be in accordance with rated insulation voltage. This also applies when using wire-end ferrules.
Weidmuller’s professional wire stripping tools guarantee perfect results due to precise adjust-ability of the tool to the corresponding insulation and the conductor cross-section. Precision wire stripping tools by Weidmüller guarantee that the user will always obtain consistent, reliable stripping results.
A big mistake is to use a stripping tool that is not matched to the insulation and cross-section of the conductor. Weidmuller offers hand-operated wire stripping tools that adjust automatically to the corresponding cross-section of the conductor. These tools are designed not to damage the conductor during stripping.
Weidmuller offers wire stripping tools for most wire types and gauges, but for this entry we will spot light The Weidmuller Stripax® wire stripping tool. The Weidmuller Stripax ® wire stripping tool guarantees a consistent stripping result which complies with DIN regulations. The Weidmuller Stripax ® wire stripping tool is rated for standard dimension PVC insulation. Any PVC insulation thicknesses deviating from normal can be set manually. The conductor stopper and integrated wire cutter allow highly versatile use of the tool.

Wire Ferrules – Product Information
Wire ferrules are also called several other names such as wire-end ferrules or cord end terminals. Wire ferrules are used to prevent fraying when using stranded wire. Wire ferrules are cylindrically shaped terminals made of plated copper. They are slipped over the stripped wire and then permanently crimped into place.
Uses for Wire-end Ferrules
When using stranded wire a single strand of the wire (or a “hair” or a “whisker”) occasionally becomes separated from the rest of the wire during the installation process. This loose strand can cause intermittent failure of the electrical system. Intermittent failures are much more difficult and expensive to isolate and repair than other types of failures. For this reason many designers are requiring the use of wire ferrules to eliminate this potential cause of failure. In addition, wire ferrules are ideally suited for applications where the wire may be inserted and removed numerous times.
Wire ferrules are available in three types: 1) uninsulated ferrules (bare); 2) insulated ferrules (a wire ferrule with a plastic collar); or 3) dual-wire ferrules (or twin-wire ferrules). Dual wire ferrules are used to install (or jumper) two wires in a single termination.
Wire-end ferrules are available loose (shipped in bags) or in strips. Ferrule strips are used in automatic crimping tools such as the Weidmuller Stripax Plus. This tool quickly and conveniently cuts the wire, strips the wire, and crimps a ferrule onto the end of the wire.

Change in Design
Weidmuller introduced the ZQV pluggable jumpers (or cross-connection) for the WDU 2.5 series of terminal blocks to provide fast and reliable jumpering. This system was an instant success. Users wanted the same exceptional functionality for the WTR disconnect blocks.
Weidmuller responded by introducing a new design for the WTR. The new design features a smaller disconnect lever plus a slot for the insertion of the ZQV 2.5 series pluggable jumpers. The basic part number for this terminal block (wihout test sockets) is P/N 1855610000.
Specialty Control Systems Z-Series Terminal Blocks
Here is the latest installment of our Weidmuller Terminal block product information newsletter.
Features of Weidmuller Z-Series Terminal Blocks
The Z-Series terminal block, moulded from Wemid material, is thermally stable up to 120 deg C yet still retains a high degree of flexibility and breakage resistance. The current bars are constructed of tin-plated copper to insure high conductivity and corrosion resistance.
The highlight of the Weidmuller Z-Series Terminal Block product line is a unique, tension-clamp technology that insures a secure, vibration-resistant connection. A stainless-steel spring is used to securely connect the wire to the current bar. A screwdriver is used to open the tension-clamp for the insertion of the wire. When the screwdriver is is removed, a high contact force is supplied by the stainless spring clamp insuring a gas-tight connection to the current bar.
The tension-clamp technology makes termination of the system wiring extremely fast. In addition, the wiring entries are generally on the top of the block in this product line. This means that it is easier to see where the wire is being inserted and helps reduce wiring errors.
The Z-Series terminal block product line includes feed-thru blocks, fuse blocks, disconnect blocks and much more and supports wire sizes from 0.05 sq mm to 35 sq mm.
All of these terminal blocks mount on industry standard TS 35 DIN Mounting Rail. Most of these blocks snap easily onto the rail without requiring any tools.

The Weidmuller ESX10-T Series circuit protectors have remote reset capabilities that operate through the use of an electronic signal. These circuit protection devices are compact and combine electronic trip characteristics and active current limitation to allow selective disconnection of loads that are connected to 24VDC power supplies (which are widely used in industry today). Selective load protection prevents complete shutdown of the system by quickly disconnecting the faulty path when an overload or short circuit occurs. In other words, selective load protection prevents complete shutdown of the system or output in the event of an overload with the result that one faulty load in the system would otherwise lead to complete disconnection of all loads. This eliminates the need to open an enclosure, dispatch repair personnel and risk their exposure to electrical components.
According to Jay Armstrong of Specialty Control Systems,
“These innovative circuit breakers will find a great deal of use in applications where volatile gasses are present or where these gasses have the proclivity produce explosive hazards.”
Armstrong went on to say that the traditional circuit breakers create an electrical arc that could be disastrous if certain conditions exist.
Typical applications for the Weidmuller ESX10-T include: automation systems (e.g. machine tool, packaging machines) and process control systems (petro/chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, etc.) where selective disconnection is vital and an integral safety technology exists, such as a safety PLC or similar system.
Through selective disconnection feature, the Weidmuller ESX10-T responds much faster to overload or short-circuit conditions than the switch-mode power supply. This is achieved by active current limitation. The Weidmuller ESX10-T limits the highest possible current to 1.3 to 1.8 times the selected rated current of the circuit breaker. Thus, it is possible to switch on capacitive loads of up to 20,000 μ F, but they are disconnected only in the event of an overload or short circuit. For optimal alignment with the characteristics of the application the current rating of the Weidmuller ESX10-T can be selected in fixed values from 0.5 A to 12 A. Failure and status indication are provided by The Weidmuller ESX10-T Offers a multicolored LED light to indicate failure and working status of the circuit breaker in tandem with an integral, short-circuit-proof status output or relay signal contact. Another useful feature is the ability to access remote operation by use of remote reset signal or remote ON/OFF control signal. If the remote function is not the preferred method the manual ON/OFF button allows for separate actuation and reset of individual load circuits.
