Types of Power Supplies

Power supplies are broadly divided into two groups: switched (also called switchmode) and linear.

Switchmode Power Supplies

Switchmode or “switcher” type power supplies operate from an input voltage of either AC or DC. The input voltage is rectified, chopped and PWM (pulse width modulated) into a high frequency AC voltage which is passed through a low loss ferrite core transformer. The output is then rectified, filtered and fed to the output as a DC voltage. The inherent value of the “switcher” is its efficiency, size and light weight. Benefits and features include:

• Hight efficiency for low heat dissipation
• Can be used as a DC/DC converter
• Universal input wich accepts 85-265 VAC and 115-300 VDC
• Efficiency of 78% at full power
• Overload protection with thermal shutdown
• Very high input to output isolation

Linear Power Supplies

The linear power supply operates from an AC voltage source and consists of a transformer, bridge rectifier, filter, and voltage regulator. The regulator maintains a fixed voltage output within the designed load range. Typical uses for linear supplies fall into the less than 20 watt power range. Highly regulated linear supplies are used in precision signal measurement circuits where very little DC ripple can be tolerated. Benefits and features include:

• Very little electrical noise
• Fixed, stable output voltage
• Simple design

• Overload protection
• Circuit isolation AC line to DC load
• Suitable for parallel interconnection for redundant power backup
• High input to output isolation

Weidmuller Class 1, Div 2 Power Supplies

Weidmuller now offers a complete line of Class 1, Div 2 Rated power supplies suitable for use in some hazardous areas. Specifically designed for the petrochemical industry, these power supplies do not require explosion proof enclosures making them the power supply of choice.

The top-of-the-line in this group of power supplies is the CP-SNT 300W. This power supply is the complete DC power solution. Universal input accepts power of 115-230 VAC or 100-200 VDC, with active power factor correction. This unit has 3 analog outputs (0 – 10 V) to represent output voltage, output current, and internal temperature.

Paralleling or redundancy can be implemented using up to 5 units without any adjustments. The status relay directly tracks the output voltage which is adjustable from 22 – 28 VDC @ 12.5 Amps. The internal fan supports mounting the unit in any orientation (on rail or even panel mounted) without de-rating. The CP-SNT 300W is certified for groups A, B, C and D with a temperature code of T4A.
